Are You Tasting the Pith? - 18th July 04

Alcohol and Health

The column this week would have been reviews of Youngs Kew Garden Ale, Ringwood Old Thumper and a couple of other Southern brews, picked up on a visit to see BeerBoy the Younger (my "little" brother) as he lay in his hospital bed after having what was desribed as "the best sort of heart attack you can have" by one of the staff who admitted him.

I say "would have been", because unfortunately I forgot to bring the beers back up to Leeds with me. Not to worry, I could have had them forwarded by post for my perusal. Well, I say "could have had them forwarded", because BeerBoy the Elder (my father) rang me to apologise for enthusiastically "tasting" them all himself.

(As an aside, while I was in Salisbury, I paid £2.60 for a pint of Summer Lightning, exactly £1 more than my last pint of the same beer in Leeds. Odd, when you consider that Salisbury is a mere 6 miles from the Hop Back Brewery, and Leeds is more like 250 miles)

So while we wait for the tasting notes to show up, why don't we take a little time out to reflect on our own health and mortality. Perhaps you might like to peruse these links on alcohol and health, in lieu of tapping the appropriate search phrases into Google yourself.

I'm still waiting, Father....
